Weingut Dr. Fischer - Hofstätter Weis
Winemaker Nik Weis from Weingut St. Urbans-Hof on the Mosel and Martin Foradori Hofstätter from Weingut J. Hofstätter in Alto Adige seized the welcome opportunity to participate in a joint ownership and revitalisation of the historic “Weingut Dr. Fischer”. The estate in Ockfen on the Saar River is famed for its Riesling and is a founding member of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP). The small, internationally acclaimed winery cultivates exclusively Riesling in the extraordinary sites “Ockfener Bockstein” and “Saarburger Kupp”.
A concavely curved vineyard slope surrounds the tiny wine village Ockfen like a natural amphitheatre. The estate achieved international acclaim with the “Ockfener Bockstein”. Its steep plots facing south and southwest are comprised primarily of grey slate. The soil and climate are ideal for clearly structured, mineral, delicately fruity flavoured Rieslings.
The steepness of the “Saarburger Kupp” vineyard slope above the wine village Saarburg is outright dramatic. The soil of the “Kupp” is predominantly red slate and lends the Rieslings here a slightly different mineral character than that of the “Bockstein”. In the extremely steep slopes of both places the vines are trained on individual wooden posts. Both vine maintenance and the harvest continue to be performed manually, just as in the past.
No other variety embodies terroir quite like Riesling. Every site contributes its own unique note to a complex flavour repertoire. After all, Riesling performs at its peak on the Saar River!
